The TISHK Center for Kurdistan Studies is pleased to announce its tenth seminar in the 2025 series, entitled: "Kurdish Nation-Building".
The seminar will be presented by Abdullah Hijab, political analyst, author, and translator. This seminar in the 2025 TISHK Seminar Series will explore the themes of Abdullah Hijab’s latest publication, titled Nation-Building. The book, based on his MA research at the University of Oslo, offers a critical academic investigation into the Kurdish struggle for identity and national rights. It engages with political theory and comparative analysis to develop new insights into the Kurdish national question.
Hijab’s work draws on a combination of historical documents and sociopolitical theory to examine the key phases in the development of Kurdish political organization, national consciousness, and the struggle for self-determination. Special emphasis is placed on both internal and external factors shaping Kurdish nation-building—such as the influence of regional dynamics and global political shifts. The author highlights the challenges and opportunities facing Kurdish national identity in a turbulent political context, proposing that nationhood should not only be understood as a political process but also as a cultural and social transformation.
Nation-Building reflects on how national concepts and values must be rethought and developed from within the Kurdish context. The book calls for a renewal of national thought grounded in lived experience, academic inquiry, and cultural imagination.

The seminar will be led by Ali Monazzami, a member of the TISHK Magazine editorial board and graduate in Peace and Conflict Philosophy from the University of Tromsø.
Scheduled for Sunday, June 27, 2025, at 6 PM (Berlin time), the seminar will be conducted in Kurdish. The session includes a 10-minute introduction, a 30-minute presentation, a 25-minute Q&A session, and a 10-minute panel discussion and conclusion.
