While social movements within Iran’s civil society advocate for universal values such as democracy, human rights, and women’s rights, the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) concurrently promotes Islamism, particularly within Iran and the broader Middle East. Following a brief historical overview of Islamism, as a political ideology, in Iran and its regional expansion, the symposium will delve into the intricate relationship between Islamism in Iran and terrorist movements like Hamas. The discussion will explore the potential of the pro-democracy movement in Iran to mitigate terrorism in the region and foster peace in the Middle East.
