Symposium: Political transformation processes in Iran

The TISHK Center for Kurdistan Studies is pleased to announce a symposium entitled "Political Transformation Processes in Iran" to be held on Friday, 12 January 2024 at the University of Bonn (Hörsaal I)| Am Hof 1, 53113 Bonn.

Our symposium will be attended by renowned scholars, including researchers from various fields such as sociology, oriental studies, Islamic studies, political science and international law. Their contributions aim at promoting an interdisciplinary dialogue on the political transformation processes in Iran.

Political developments in Iran have undergone a remarkable transformation since the state assassination of Jina Amini in September 2022. The spread of protests from Kurdistan marked a decisive turning point in the contemporary history of Kurdistan and Iran. This symposium examines the implications of this shift and asks whether the periphery, including Kurdistan, now forms the core of political developments in Iran.

While the progressive social movements of civil society in both Kurdistan and Iran are fighting for universal values such as democracy, human rights, and women's rights, the IRI is spreading Islamism in Iran itself and, above all, in the Middle East. After a brief review of the history of political Islam in Iran and its spread in the Middle East, the question of the relationship between political Islam in Iran and terrorist movements such as Hamas will be raised. The symposium will consider whether the pro-democracy movement in Iran can lead to a weakening of terrorism in the region and the promotion of peace in the Middle East.
