TISHK Seminar Series
TISHK Seminar SeriesA seminar on ‘How Did AI Evolve from a Research Field into a Domain of Mass Adoption?’
The TISHK Center for Kurdistan Studies is pleased to announce its fifteenth seminar in the 2025 series, entitled “How Did AI Evolve from a Research Field into a Domain of Mass Adoption?”
The seminar will be presented by Dr. Aran Amini, computer scientist currently affiliated with the University of Le Mans in France.
Dr. Amini completed his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Avignon in France, where he subsequently served as a postdoctoral researcher for one year. He then worked for nearly two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Le Mans, focusing on speech translation and speech recognition. In 2014, he co-founded the AsoSoft research group, dedicated to developing Kurdish language technologies. He is also the founder of the “Jiridastkrd” platform, which aims to provide speech technologies for all Kurdish dialects. His research to date includes speech recognition for Zazakî, Northern Kurdish (Kurmancî), Central Kurdish (Sorânî), Southern Kurdish, and Kurdish Hewramî, as well as speech synthesis and speech translation for Sorânî. In addition, he established a research group at the University of Duhok dedicated to developing speech technologies for the Badinî Kurdish dialect.
Drawing from an interdisciplinary perspective, this seminar explores the development of Artificial Intelligence: What is AI and what are its main components? Which scientific breakthroughs enabled AI to move, within only a few years, from an academic research field to an integral part of everyday life for millions of people? What technological, economic, and theoretical transformations shaped this transition?
In the second part of the seminar, the status of the Kurdish language within the field of Artificial Intelligence will be examined critically. The discussion will analyze current challenges and present ongoing research initiatives aimed specifically at developing technologies for Kurdish language dialects.
The seminar will be moderated and chaired by M. Sc. Daham Muhamad, Geodetic Engineering at the University of Bonn.
The seminar will take place on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 18:00 (Berlin time) and will be held in Kurdish. The session will include a 10-minute introduction, a 30-minute presentation, a 25-minute Q&A session, and a 10-minute panel discussion and concluding remarks.
